Active Gaming Media Inc. is proud to announce that Cowboy Yakuza – the “East meets West(ern)” action title developed by AGM’s own in-house development team – was released on Steam Early Access today, February 17th, 2020. This Early Access version is now available for $9.99, with a full release scheduled for later this spring.
What is Cowboy Yakuza?
Cowboy Yakuza is the story of Texas-born Cleveland (“Cleve”) Waingro and his adventures through late-80s in Japan. In the more downtrodden neighborhoods of Osaka, largely unaffected by the Japanese economic bubble of the 1980s, Cleve had been leading a peaceful, quiet life – almost as if he had been hiding from something…
It wasn’t long before the local Yakuza, after witnessing Cleve’s impressive physical prowess and innate ability to handle himself in a fight, decided they wanted to harness this powerhouse from the West for themselves and forcefully recruited him into their own ranks.
Now, Cleve must make some crucial and life-altering decisions: Are these Japanese gangsters friends or foes? Which will he trust – his sense of duty, or his own humanity? Which will he choose – love, or friendship?
Caught up in the chaotic web of intrigue, violence, and crime that now pervaded every aspect of his newfound life, and left with no way to turn back, Cleve set off down a dangerous and blood-soaked path…
Characters
Cleveland Waingro
The hero of our story, and the sole player-character. An extremely physically strong and street-smart man from Texas, goes by the nickname “Cleve”. Previously worked as an English instructor in Osaka, but lost his job due to “interpersonal issues”. While self-confidence and fearlessness are two of his main strengths, they often have a tendency to get him into trouble. Fiercely loyal to the few people he considers his true friends.
Shinji Matoba
Wakagashira, or “Number 2”, of the Sawada Clan.
Impressed by Cleve’s fearless heroics and street-fighting savvy, Matoba offers Cleve a spot in the Sawada Clan – an offer Cleve can’t use.
Highly intelligent and generally composed, he has gained the full trust of the clan leader, who has places him at the head of the ongoing blood feud with the opposing Tange Clan.
Masaru Amari
The Tange Clan’s heavy-hitter, he’s champing at the bit to take Cleve and the Sawada Clan head-on.
Born in Kyushu, his father was also a Yakuza who died when Masaru was 13 years old.
Although he and Cleve are on opposing sides of the war, he is impressed with Cleve’s courage and opens up to him out of respect.
Early Access As
this is an Early Access version of the game, there are still a few bugs and limitations, which will be fixed/lifted in the full version of the game to be released later this year.
Moving Forward
Development of Cowboy Yakuza has entered its final stages, and the majority of the game has been completed. However, Active Gaming Media made the decision to release the game to Steam Early Access in hopes of collecting invaluable user feedback on gameplay, storylines, and game balance directly from the players.
